California Stays Hot, Shuts Out Florida State, 1-0, in WCWS
May 24, 2002
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - No. 4 California (54-19) defeated No. 8 Florida State (54-19) 1-0 on freshman Chelsea Spencer's solo blast Friday afternoon in the Women's College World Series at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium for its ninth consecutive win. The Golden Bears tied the school record for wins set last year when Cal went 54-18 to finish tied for fifth overall. This marks the first time that the Bears have won the first two games of a WCWS.
Spectators saw a game characteristic of a WCWS contest where neither team's batters were able to collect a hit, while pitchers dominated the scene. It wasn't until the top of the fourth inning. Senior Jocelyn Forest, who tossed her sixth consecutive complete game, had a no-hitter for 3.2 innings, but gave up a bunt single to Brandi Stuart. Forest would only give up one other hit as Cal's defense vacuumed up grounders and fly balls in addition to her seven strikeouts.
The win was Forest's 27th of the season, which tied her career-high for single season victories. Only one Seminole, Stuart managed a hit. Meanwhile for Cal, five Bears collected a hit against Leslie Malerich, who struck out two batters while walking two. For Spencer, two of her three homers are game-winners.
Cal is slated to face the winner of game nine Sunday, May 26 at noon, live on ESPN2.
