Baseball Battles For 5-4 Win At UCLA In 12 Innings

May 25, 2002

LOS ANGELES - Senior Bill Peavey's bloop RBI single in the top of the 12th inning Friday gave the No. 21 USC Trojans a 5-4 victory against the UCLA Bruins in Pac-10 Conference action at Jackie Robinson Stadium. It was the Trojans' first win in extra innings in four games this season.

USC improved to 32-22 on the season and remained in first place in the Pac-10 with a 15-7 record while UCLA fell to 26-33, 9-13 in conference play. The Trojans are one game ahead of Stanford and Washington, who both won this evening. USC needs to win on Saturday or Sunday to clinch a share of the conference title while winning both games would give the Trojans their second straight outright title.

The Trojans also need to win both games in order to win the Lexus Gauntlet, the year-long competition between USC and UCLA.

UCLA scored first with a run in the second. Catcher Casey Grzecka singled to center and advanced to third on a double to left by left fielder Billy Susdorf. Third baseman Brandon Averill followed with a run-scoring ground out to short, plating Grzecka.

USC answered with two solo home runs in the third. Second baseman Anthony Lunetta hit his first homer of the season while Peavey followed with his home run to right field, the 13th of the season.

In the bottom of the third, UCLA center fielder Rashad Parker doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a passed ball charged to USC catcher Alberto Concepcion. Bruin designated hitter Josh Arhart hit a soft line drive that bounced off a diving Jon Brewster at third base for a base hit, allowing Parker to score.

Both teams traded two-run homers in the fifth with Concepcion hitting his 11th of the season with a home run to right while Parker hit his third of the year for the Bruins.

In the bottom of the eighth, UCLA had runners at first and second with two outs and Adam Berry at the plate facing USC reliever Brett Bannister. It was the same situation last year at Jackie Robinson Stadium when Berry hit a game-winning three-run homer off Bannister's older brother, Brian, in a 4-3 win (USC's Mark Prior and UCLA's Josh Karp, first-round selections in last year's draft, both received a no-decision in that game) . However, the younger Bannister struck out Berry to end the threat.

USC loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but UCLA reliever Doug Silva struck out Concepcion to end the inning. The Bruins had runners at first and second with two outs, but Bannister got left fielder Matt Thayer to line out to center. Bannister did it to Thayer again in the bottom of the 11th, striking him out with the bases loaded and two outs to end the inning.

Senior center fielder Brian Barre led off the 12th with his only hit of the night with a single to right center. He advanced to second on a sacrifice by Lunetta and went to third on a single by Concepcion. Peavey blooped a single to center, scoring Barre for the game-winner. Bannister retired the Bruins in order in the bottom of the 12th with the last out coming on a ground ball to Bannister by Averill. Bannister sprinted to first and underhanded the ball to Peavey to record the win.

Bannister rebounded from a miserable start last Sunday when he allowed six runs without recording an out in a 17-8 loss at Arizona State. The freshman allowed only four hits on Friday in six scoreless innings, striking out seven and allowing only one walk.

Base running errors plagued the Trojans all evening. With runners at first and second in the second, right fielder David Gordon was caught off second on a line drive by Brewster and was doubled up to end the inning. In the sixth with runners at first and third, Brewster hit a bouncer to third that Averill caught on the first hop. He tagged Michael Moon and threw out Brewster for another inning-ending double play.

The Trojans continue their series with the Bruins tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on FOX Sports Net 2 with Bill MacDonald and Jack McDowell calling the action. Saturday's game will also be broadcast live on
