May 26, 2002

MESA, Ariz. - The Oregon State baseball team finished the regular season Sunday afternoon as it was defeated 5-2 by No. 17 Arizona State in front of 1,921 at Hohokam Stadium.

The Beavers (31-23 overall, 10-14 Pac-10) fell behind early when the Sun Devils scored an unearned run in the first inning. ASU added a run in the second and two more in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Levi Webber pinch hit for Pat Stevens in the sixth and homered with Jason McBride on base as the Beavers cut the deficit to 4-2.

ASU's Jeremy West hit a solo home run in the 8th inning for the game's final run.

'It's disappointing,' OSU head coach Pat Casey said. 'We played like a post-season team most of this season, so this is a disappointment for all of us.'

Brian Barden, OSU's all-time leader in hits, went 2-for-5 in Sunday's game to raise his career total to 231. J.R. Runyon, Paul Richie and Andy Jarvis all had two hits for OSU, which out hit ASU 13-8.

Aaron Mathews singled to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. Mathews had a 12-game hitting streak earlier in the year.

Mark McLemore pitched six innings for the Beavers and allowed four runs and seven hits in taking the loss.
