Wildcat Track & Field Finishes Day One at NCAA Championships
May 29, 2002
BATON ROUGE, La. - In the first day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Wildcats had some unexpected performances. At the day's end, the Wildcat women are tied for 20th place with one point. The Wildcat men have yet to score a point with no athletes competing in any finals yet. Georgia tops the men's standings with 15 points, while UCLA is in first on the women's side with the same score.
In the first event of the day for the Wildcats, sophomore Amy Linnen took to the pole vault competition. In a disappointing performance, Linnen came out with a no height mark. She passed at the first height of 12-3 (3.75m) and went on to not clear 12-9 (3.90m).
Senior Angela Foster was also out on the field in the hammer throw competition. Though she was not ranked amongst the top eight throwers, Foster came through for the Wildcats with an eighth-place finish, giving the Wildcats their lone point thus far in the meet. Foster finished with a best throw of 200-3 (61.03m). This was her best mark of the year, but it was still seven feet off of her school record mark that she set in March of 2001.
On the track for the Wildcat women, senior Brianna Glenn finished as the fourth-best qualifier in the 200m preliminaries. Her time of 22.97 is her second-best time this season. Senior Tara Chaplin took to the 10,000m final as the number-two qualifier this year. But at the end of the night, Chaplin had a disappointing run and finished 17th in 36:01.62.
Senior Mike Kenyon was the only competitor for the Wildcat men in the first day of competition. He competed in the 200m preliminaries but failed to qualify for the finals. He had the 12th-fastest time of the day at 20.89.
The Wildcats will be competing in four events in Thursday's events. Julie DeMarni will participate in the women's javelin, Mike Kenyon will run in the 400m preliminaries, and Brianna Glenn will compete in the 100m preliminaries and the long jump final.
