Cougars Just Miss Advancing To Semifinals At NCAA's
May 31, 2002
INDIANAPOLIS - The 10th ranked Washington State varsity eight women's rowing squad finished fourth in the Repechage heat and did not advance to Saturday's semifinal heats at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships at Eagle Creek Park, Friday.
The WSU boat of Sarah Bankston, Gunilla Grafnings, Erin Patterson, Emily Tribe, Catherine Lortie, Corrie McGrath, Beth Rodford, Emily Rains and Carolyn Oury needed to finish in the top three positions to advance to Saturday's two semifinal heats. Although the Cougars will not race in the semifinals, they will compete for 13th place in the consolation final at 8 a.m. Pacific, Saturday.
The Cougars rowed to a time of 6:47.24, just over a half second behind third place Michigan, which clocked a time of 6:46.72. Southern California prevailed in the heat, as the Women of Troy rowed to a time of 6:43.40 ahead of second place Syracuse's 6:45.45.
'There were no key things in terms of anything going wrong, we just got out-raced,' said Head Coach Tammy Crawford. 'We didn't have the ultimate race and to compete at this level you really need to put together back-to-back exceptional races.
'I'm disappointed that we're not racing in the semifinals tomorrow but it's been a great year altogether,' Crawford added. 'It's not over until it's over and I want the team to go out and have the greatest race of the season tomorrow.'
The Cougars were forced to race in the Repechage heat, which was delayed two hours due to lightning and thunderstorms; by virtue of its fifth place finish in its varsity eight heat during the morning session.
WSU missed out finishing in the top three places in the heat, which was required to advance to the semifinals, by 1.4 seconds. The Cougars rowed a time of 6:56.30 to finish fifth in the six-boat heat. Washington captured the heat recording a time of 6:47.20. Harvard took second place with a time of 6:54.20 while Virginia rounded out the top three positions at 6:54.90.
