Husky Golfers Place 11th at NCAA Championships

June 1, 2002

Columbus, OH - The Washington men's golf team shot a final round score of 13-over 297 to finish tied for 11th at the NCAA Championships at Ohio State's Scarlet Course. Minnesota capped an emotional season by winning the tournament with a final round of 6-under 278 to better Georgia Tech by four strokes. The Yellowjackets shot 1-over 285 to finish at 1138. Clemson and Texas tied for fourth at 142.

In April Minnesota announced it was dropping its men's and women's golf programs as a costsaving measure. After a public outcry, the University said it would give the programs a one-year reprieve if the necessary funds could be raised to support the programs. The Golden Gophers went on the win the Big Ten championship before finishing first at the NCAAs.

Washington's 11th-place finish equaled the second best showing at the NCAAs by a Husky team. The 1999 squad placed fourth overall while the 1966 team also tied for 11th. This year's tournament was Washington's fourth straight appearance at the NCAAs and the eighth in the history of the program.

It marked the first time any member of the current UW team has played during the finals of the NCAAs. The past two seasons the team failed to make the cut after the first two rounds.

'We've never done this before,' said first-year coach Matt Thurmond. 'We've played in a lot of big tournaments, but these guys have never teed it up in the final group, playing for the national championship. That's extreme pressure. It can either bring out your best or your worst and today, it brought out our worst.

'I think we were over excited,' Thurmond said. 'It's tough to control. You know what you have to do. You have to relax and just play your game.

Husky sophomore Brock Mackenzie (Yakima) had a disappointing final round of 5-over 76 to finish tied for 17th overall at 1-under 283. Mackenzie had started the day in third place at 3-under par. Georgia Tech's Troy Matteson shot 4-under 67 to win medalist honors with an 8-under score of 276. TCU's Adam Rubinson was second at 277 while Hunter Mahan of Oklahoma State finished third at 278.

'I was probably too excited,' Mackenzie said. 'I thought I was relaxed this morning hitting balls on the practice range, but I had one bad swing on the first hole this morning and it snowballed from there.

'There were just a couple of bad breaks today. We were in it going into today, so it was a good week. Unfortunately the final round did not go the way we wanted.'

Washington, which started the day at 3-over, just two strokes behind tournament leading Georgia Tech, got off to a poor start when Mackenzie recorded a triple-bogie on his first hole. He completed his round with two more bogies and a double bogie. He recorded birdies on the eighth and 18th holes.

Mackenzie's 17th place finish was the second best performance by a Husky at the NCAAs. Only Troy Kelley's second-place finish in 1999 was better.

'Going in to the week, one of my goals was to be in contention going into the final round and I was,' Mackenzie said. 'It just did not come out the way I wanted it. I played one of my worst rounds of the year.

'Overall I can learn from this. I was happy to play in the last group at the national championship. It is something that everybody dreams about and hopefully I'll be back someday.'

Washington was led during the final round by junior John Robertson (Olympia) and sophomore Dan Potter (Coeur d'Alene) who both shot 1-over 72. Potter and junior Conner Robbins (Bremerton) finished the tournament at 7-over 291. Robinson was 10-over 294. Sophomore Corey Prugh (Spokane), who shot 7-over 78 on Saturday, shot 11-over 295 for 72 holes.

'I thought we had a pretty darn good week,' Thurmond said. 'It's not going to look great because of the way we finished, but the fact is we had three pretty good days. It was a good experience and all of these guys will be back next season. We'll learn from this. It is the second best finish by a Washington team, so these guys have a lot to be proud of.'
