USC, BYU Battle In Regional Final On Monday
June 2, 2002
LOS ANGELES -- The USC baseball team (36-22) will host BYU (31-30-1) in an NCAA First-Round Regional final tomorrow at noon at Dedeaux Field. BYU would need to win Game 6 to force a 4 p.m. winner-take-all game for the right to advance to the NCAA Super Regional next weekend (June 7-9) against the winner of Stanford-Long Beach State.
The Trojans advanced to the regional final after a 7-5 win yesterday against Cal State Northridge in a winner's bracket contest. BYU eliminated Maine, 12-5, in a loser's bracket game yesterday morning and eliminated Cal State Northridge last night with a 7-2 win.
Saturday's game was also a milestone for USC head coach Mike Gillespie, who coached in his 1,000th game for his 16-year career with the Trojans.
USC defeated BYU, 5-4 in 12 innings, on Friday after senior Brian Barre led off the bottom of the inning with a game-winning solo home run to center.
Single-game tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors and will be available at the gate. The game will broadcast live, along with Live Stats play-by-play, on www.usctrojans.com.
