Luke Powell Named Second-Team Preseason All-America by The Sporting News

June 3, 2002

Junior Luke Powell today was named a Second-Team Preseason All-America by The Sporting News as a kick returner. Powell, from Smyrna, Tenn., was the Cardinal's leading receiver a year ago and one of the top kick returners in the nation. His 16.0 average on punt returns led the Pac-10 in 2001 and ranked second in the NCAA.

Powell became Stanford's first All-America kick returner in school history last season when he was named to the Football Writers Association First-Team. As a receiver, he led the team with 40 receptions for 790 yards and seven touchdowns. His 19.8 yards per reception average was the second best single season in school history.

Throughout his career, Powell has earned the reputation as one of the most dangerous players in college football. He has 58 career receptions for 1,292 yards, 10 touchdowns and a 22.3 yards per catch average, which currently ranks first in the Cardinal record book. He also has 28 career punt returns for 399 yards and a 14.3 average.
