Matt Payne Selected in the 50th Round of the Major League Amateur Draft

BERKELEY, CA - California senior right-handed side-arm reliever Matt Payne was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 50th round of the 2002 Major League Amateur Draft.
Payne, who transferred from San Francisco City College in 2000, went 3-2 this season with a 4.34 ERA in 16 appearances. He also had 18 strikeouts in 29.0 innings pitched and picked up victories over Georgetown, Santa Clara and Fresno State.
Payne joins senior right-hander Trevor Hutchinson, junior catcher John Baker and senior second baseman Carson White as Cal baseball players selected in the 2002 professional baseball draft. Hutchinson was selected in the third round by the Florida Marlins, Baker was selected in the fourth round by the Oakland A's and White was selected in the 23rd round by the Colorado Rockies.
