2002 Arizona Women's Tennis Review

The Arizona women's tennis team ended a very successful 2002 in late May as they were defeated in the second round of the NCAA Regional.
First-year coach Vicky Maes led the Wildcats to a season record of 12-11 with a 4-4 mark in the Pac-10. It was the first time since 1998 that the program had a winning dual match record and the first time since 1997 the Wildcats have owned a Pac-10 record of .500 or better. Arizona earned a 9-4 record at home, up from a 6-7 mark in 2000.
In the rankings this season, Arizona jumped up consistently through the year, beginning the spring season at No. 51 and peaking at No. 18 the week of April 24. Arizona was ranked No. 51 (1/8), No. 45 (1/30), No. 44 (2/13), No. 43 (2/20), No. 45 (2/27), No. 34 (3/6), No. 31 (3/13), No. 30 (3/20), No. 34 (3/27-4/3), No. 21 (4/10), No. 25 (4/17), No. 18 (4/24) and No. 19 in the most recent poll released on May 1.
The Cats earned four victories this season over teams ranked in the top 35. Arizona defeated No. 19 Texas A&M, No. 34 Washington, No. 28 Washington State and No. 9 Arizona State.
Individually for the Cats, four of the seven singles players earned winning records in singles play. Freshman Maja Mlakar and sophomore Debbie Larocque led the team with 23 singles wins apiece. Freshman Marie-Pier Pouliot recorded 20 victories in her inaugural year with the Cats. Freshman Dianne Hollands is fourth on the team in singles wins with 15.

Upset ASU's No. 15-ranked Adria Engel in the Wildcats' 4-3 victory over the Sun Devils on 4/20...Earned a 4-4 Pac-10 record in dual meets...Had three 4-game win streaks throughout the year... Won her first-round matchup in the NCAA singles' tournament, but failed to move past the second round... Teamed with Larocque in doubles for most of the year...Compiled an 18-12 record with Larocque...Ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation...Notched two top-ten wins with Larocque...Earned a 4-4 mark in the Pac-10... Lost her first-round matchup with Larocque in the NCAA doubles' tournament.
Debbie Larocque: Played in the No. 2 singles position for the Cats... Earned a 22-15 singles record on the season... Won her bracket at the William and Mary Invitational during fall play... Had two 4-game win streaks on the season... Defeated Texas' No. 41 Katie Ruckert, 6-1, 7-6... Upset No. 24 Dora Krstulovic in Arizona's 4-3 defeat over ASU on 4/20... Lone Wildcat with winning singles Pac-10 mark at 5-3... Teamed with Mlakar in doubles for most of the year...Compiled a 18-12 record with Mlakar...Ranked as high as No. 9 in the nation... Notched two top ten wins with Mlakar... Earned a 4-4 mark in the Pac-10... Lost in the first round of the NCAA doubles' tournament.
Dianne Hollands: Played primarily as Arizona's No. 3 singles player... Earned a 15-12 singles record... Advanced to the third round of the Pac-10 Indoor Championships with two victories...Upset Stanford's No. 15 Lauren Barnikow, 6-3, 7-6 on 3/9... Defeated UCLA's No. 61 Petya Marinova, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3... Advanced to the quarterfinal round at the Pac-10 Outdoor Championships... Topped San Diego State's Katja Karrento in the first round of the NCAA Regional, 6-4, 6-1... Teamed with Brooke Taylor in doubles for majority of the year... Notched a 9-6 record with Taylor... Had a season-high 3-game win streak against USC, Washington and Washington State... Perrine Pernin: Played in the No. 4 and 5 singles spots... Logged 10 victories in dual match play... Defeated Oregon's Courtney Nagle, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, in Arizona's first Pac-10 win of the season... Topped Arizona State's Cindy Sureephong in Arizona's 4-3 win on 4/20...
Marie-Pier Pouliot: Arizona's No. 5 singles player... Recorded a 20-17 singles record on the season... 4-4 singles mark in the Pac-10... Topped No. 87 Ana Radeljevic of Old Dominion, 6-4, 6-3... Had a season-high 4-game winning streak to begin spring play... Defeated Washington State's Nora Gaal, 6-4, 6-1, in Arizona's upset win on 4/6... Daniela Torres: Played in the No. 6 singles spot... Finished the season with a 9-15 record, 1-2 in the Pac-10... Defeated Texas A&M's Roberta Spencer, 7-6, 6-3, in Arizona's upset of the No. 19 Aggies on 3/1... Earned three consecutive singles wins against Texas A&M, Texas and Northern Arizona...
Brooke Taylor: Played in the No. 6 singles spot... Compiled a 2-6 record in her senior campaign... Recorded a victory over Kansas State's Andrea Cooper, 5-7, 6-0, 6-0, in the first meet of the year... Competed with Hollands in the No. 3 doubles spot for most of the year... Notched a 9-6 record with Hollands... Had a season-high 3-game win streak against USC, Washington and Washington State...
