Gymnasts Make Their Mark Academically

Seattle, Wash. - - After finishing the 2002 season with a 7-13 record and a 4th place finish at the 2002 NCAA West Regional, the Washington women's gymnastics team has consistently achieved high academic marks. The team has held the highest cumulative GPA in the University of Washington's athletic department the past three out of four academic quarters. In the winter of 2001, the team had a cumulative GPA of 3.47. A 3.44 cumulative GPA gave them top marks again in the fall of 2001. They continued academic excellence in the winter of 2002 with a cumulative GPA of 3.39.

The gymnastics team held their awards banquet in early May. Sophomore Emily Pritchard was voted MVP. Pritchard scored a career best and first place finish of 9.975 on the vault at the 2002 Pac-10 Championships. Most Inspirational and Rookie of the Year went to freshman Carly Dockendorf. Dockendorf excelled on the floor exercise, winning first place in four meets during the 2002 season. Dockendorf scored a career best on the floor with a first place finish of 9.975 against Utah on Feb. 8.

Freshman Kim Lewis was voted Most Improved. Lewis scored a career best of 9.725 on the bars at the 2002 Pac-10 Championships. Lewis scored a career best of 9.875 on the floor at the 2002 NCAA West Regional. After sitting out the 2001 season with an injury, lone senior Allison Bruce was voted the 101 Scholar Athlete. Bruce scored a career best on the beam of 9.875 at the 2002 Pac-10 Championships. Freshman Jacynda Wnek was voted Most Outstanding GPA. Wnek has a cumulative GPA of 3.86 and is majoring in psychology.

Junior Stacy Wong was voted team captain for the 2003 season. Wong was also given a Tyee Athlete Award. Wong suffered a pre-season injury and sat out the 2002 season. Wong holds a career best of 9.975 on the vault and the bars.

Academic All-Americans in 2000-2001 for the gymnastics team were Allison Bruce, Amy Metcalf, Tanya Powers and Molly Seaman. Academic All-Americans hold a GPA of 3.5 or above. Academic All-Americans in 2001-2002 were Lauren Brooks, Allison Bruce, Tacia LaBatte, Kim Lewis, Amy Metcalf, Tanya Powers, Molly Seaman and Jacynda Wnek.

The 2003 gymnastics season will begin in January.
