June 6, 2002

TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men's golfer Ricky Barnes qualified to participate in the 2002 United States Open Championship.

Barnes, a junior from Stockton, Calif., earned his spot in the U.S. Open by finishing second in a sectional qualifier at Lake Merced Golf and Country Club in Daly City, Calif. He shot a 70-67=137 (-7) to claim one of three qualifying spots in a field of 70. It will be Barnes' second career U.S. Open appearance, as he also qualified for the 2000 event at Pebble Beach.

A three-time All-America pick, Barnes just completed the 2001-02 collegiate season in which he posted a 72.13 stroke average and earned four top-10 finishes. He is currently playing some of his best golf of the year, as he closed the season with four consecutive sub-par tournament totals. Barnes was Arizona's top finisher at the 2002 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, tying for 17th place with a 283 (-1) total, and tied for individual medalist honors at the 2002 NCAA West Regional with a 210 (-6) total. He finished 2001-02 with 21 rounds at par or better, including five rounds in the 60s.

The 2002 U.S. Open Championship will be held June 13-16 at Bethpage State Park's Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y. The course is a par 70, 7,214-yard layout. It is the longest U.S. Open course in history.
