2001-02 Pac-10 Conference Medal Winners Announced
June 11, 2002
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Gina Schmidt of the Oregon State volleyball team and Todd Deacon of the Beaver golf team were named 2001-02 Pacific-10 Conference Medal winners as was announced by Commissioner Tom Hansen on Tuesday. A Conference Medal is awarded annually to each member institution's outstanding senior male and female student athlete based on the exhibition of the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics and leadership.
Schmidt, an outside hitter from Beaverlodge, Alberta, Canada, finished her four-year career as one of the most successful players to compete for OSU. She is one of only five Beavers to post 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs, finishing with 1,366 kills (third all-time at OSU) and 1,142 digs (seventh all-time at OSU). She earned All-Pacific-10 honors as a junior and was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 pick as a senior. In her final season, the Beavers posted a 17-12 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in program history and the first time in 18 years.
Schmidt is equally successful in the classroom, where she maintains a 4.00 grade point average as a business administration major. She earned Verizon Academic All-America honors in both 2000 and 2001, and was a three-time Pacific-10 All-Academic Team member. She was recently awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for her efforts in the classroom.
In the community, Schmidt has volunteered her time at numerous youth clinics and has participated in several reading and literacy activities.
Deacon, a four-year letterwinner in golf from Scottsdale, AZ, capped his senior season with a career-best finish at the Pac-10 Championships when he tied for 19th overall, helping the Beavers to third-place. Over the course of the year, Deacon set and then matched his career-best for a single round with a 71 on two occasions. Deacon, a regular in the OSU lineup with 25 rounds played, finished the season with a career-low 75.28 scoring average.
Off the course, Deacon holds a 3.27 GPA in business and is involved with the Oregon State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He has performed a number of community service projects and was the 2001 recipient of the athletic department's Glenn Klein Community Service Award.
The Conference Medal winners will be honored at the State Farm Pride of the Pac-10 Luncheon held in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Pac-10 Men's Basketball Tournament next March.
