USC Tennis Lands Four On ITA All-America Teams

LOS ANGELES - Four members of the USC men's and women's tennis teams were named to the 2002 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Team, the ITA officially announced on Tuesday, June 11. Among the four, men's tennis senior Nick Rainey and women's tennis junior Jewel Peterson captured singles and doubles All-American honors.

On the women's side, Peterson and doubles partner Tiffany Brymer earned their first career doubles All-American honor by completing the season ranked No. 8 with a 27-14 overall record. The duo advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16. Peterson's singles honor is the third consecutive of her USC career. She has been ranked and seeded among the top-20 singles players since her freshman year and she completed the 2002 season with a No. 8 final ITA ranking and a 39-9 overall record.

Aside from leading the team to the 2002 NCAA Championship, seniors Rainey and Ryan Moore capped of their USC career with a third-straight doubles All-American title. The duo finished the season ranked No. 7 and compiled a 20-10 overall record just in the spring (both players did not compete in the fall). Rainey's singles success in 2002 led to his first-ever singles All-American accolade. With a 24-9 overall record this year, Rainey received his first career berth in the NCAA Singles Tournament and qualified for the honor by advancing to the quarterfinals.

The Division I criteria for earning ITA singles All-America honors is to be selected as a Top 16 seed in the NCAA Championships, reach the round of 16 in the NCAA Championships or finish in the Top 20 of the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings.

In doubles, a pair must be named a top eight seed in the NCAA Championships, reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships or finish in the Top 10 in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
