UW Swimmer David Moilanen Named A First Team Academic All-American
June 11, 2002
SEATTLE - Washington senior swimmer David Moilanen (Renton, Wash.) capped his Husky career by being named to the 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-America Men's At-Large First Team. Moilanen is the first Husky to earn first-team honors since Ed Cunningham (football) and Pat Johnson (track) were both honored in 1991.
A four-year letterwinner, Moilanen owns a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average in chemistry and physics. A year ago, he became the first UW swimmer to ever earn Academic All-America honors, joining soccer standout Bryn Ritchie on the fall/winter at-large second team.
In the pool, Moilanen is the first UW swimmer to break the 50-second barrier in the 100 backstroke, logging a school record time of 49.69 in 2002. Moilanen also is a member of the team's school record 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays, while he is only the third swimmer in Husky history to be named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first team three times.
The 17-member Academic All-America first team is chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from NCAA Division I fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling teams. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00 (sophomore standing and above). Sports information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who are named to district teams prior to being voted upon the national level.
