STANFORD ADVANCES TO COLLEGE WORLD SERIES
Cardinal heads to Omaha for the fourth time in five seasons
STANFORD defeated USC in two games at the Super Regional at Sunken Diamond to advance to the College World Series, June 14-22 in Omaha, Nebraska ... The Cardinal is making its fourth straight appearance in Omaha, marking the first time in Stanford Baseball history that a senior class has gone to the College World Series in each of its years ... This trip to the CWS is Stanford's 14th all-time appearance ... Stanford has been the runner-up in two consecutive National Championship games. Last season the Cardinal fell to Miami, 12-1 ... This is the 52nd year (of possible 56) that the Pac-10 has sent at least one team to the CWS ... The Pac-10 has won 24 national championships, three times as many as the next conference (Big 12, eight) ... A Pac-10 team has been runner-up 12 times ... Stanford plays Notre Dame (49-16) on Saturday, June 15 at 12:30 p.m. CT (CBS) to kick off College World Series play. The Irish got to the CWS after defeating Florida State 3-1. It is Notre Dame's first trip to Omaha since 1957.

Arizona has reached the 30-win plateau for the fifth time in the past six seasons ... Head coach Andy Lopez finishes his first year at the helm of Wildcat baseball with a winning record, 31-24 (.564) ... As a team the 'Cats rank fourth in the Pac-10 with a 5.24 ERA. They also appear among league leaders in runs (433, 3rd), triples (25, t2nd) and walks (246, 3rd) ... SR SS Brad Hassey was named to the All-Pac-10 team, while SR C Chris Cunningham, SO 2B Moises Duran and FR 3B John Hardy earned honorable mention ... Arizona tied with USC as the teams with the most series sweeps this season. The 'Cats recorded sweeps over the following opponents: New Mexico, Southern Utah, San Diego State, UC Irvine and Cal State Dominguez Hills ... Arizona State lost to Houston twice and was eliminated from the tournament ... With two wins in the regional, ASU now has an all-time postseason record of 124-51 (.709) ... FR SS Dustin Pedroia, SR C Cesar Castillo, SO LF Rod Allen and JR LHP Carlos Arguello were named to the All-Regional team ... Pedroia had a great freshman campaign finishing the season on an 11-game hitting streak. He batted .347 and broke the freshman school record for hits with 82 and had just four errors during the season for a .982 fielding percentage. Pedroia was also the only Sun Devil to play and start all 58 games this season ... ASU won more than 30 games for the 40th straight year ... The Sun Devils advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the last six years, but bowed out in the first round for the third consecutive season ... ASU hosted a regional tournament for the second time in three years ... The Sun Devils finished out the regular season strong, wining eight of their last 10 games and five of their last six Pac-10 games against USC and Oregon State ... The squad put together two seven game winning streaks during the season ... ASU ranks third in the Pac-10 in hitting with a .310 batting average and second in team pitching with a 4.40 ERA. That ERA is the best in the Pat Murphy era. The team is tied for second in the Conference with Cal in fielding percentage at 9.67 ... The Sun Devil pitching staff has six complete games. ASU only had one in the 2001 season ... ASU has scored in a NCAA record 433 consecutive games dating back to the 1995 season. The old record was 349 ... The Golden Bears close out the 2002 season at 29-27 (.518), with an 11-13 Conference record ... SO 1B Conor Jackson is one of four Pac-10 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy and has been invited to the USA Baseball Team trials. Jackson finished the season leading the Bears in nearly every offensive statistical category. He also had Cal's longest hitting streak at 15 games from Feb. 1-24 ... JR C John Baker is one of 10 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award. Baker has a .993 fielding percentage and just two errors in 45 games this season ... Both Jackson and Baker were named to the All-Pac-10 team, while SO RHP Matt Brown, SR RHP Trevor Hutchinson, FR OF David Nicholson and SR 2B Carson White earned honorable mention ... Oregon State notched at least 30 wins for the fifth time in the past seven seasons. The Beavers finished the season with a near identical record from last year, minus one loss. Last season OSU finished 31-24, 11-13 ... OSU set a pair of team school records this season in triples (27) and saves (14) ... JR 3B Brian Barden set career records, becoming OSU's all-time hits (231) and total bases (355) leader. He was OSU's only selection to the All-Pac-10 team, while JR SS Will Hudson, JR 1B Andy Jarvis, JR RHP Ty Kline, FR CF Aaron Mathews, SO LF Seth Pietsch and SO RHP Jared Sanders earned honorable mention ... Pietsch and Sanders also set school single-season records, as Pietsch had 24 doubles this season and Sanders had nine saves ... Final Leaders (Offense): batting average, hits, RBI, total bases - Barden (.349, 81, 50, 125); runs, doubles, triples, slugging percentage - Pietsch (51, 24, 6, .600); home runs - Jarvis (11); on-base percentage - Wick Udy (.440). UCLA (26-34 Overall, 9-15 Pac-10, t7th Place)
UCLA finished this season with the same Pac-10 record it posted a year ago. The Bruins also finished seventh in last year's standings ... LHP/1B Wes Whisler was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. The frosh hit .328 with a league-leading 18 home runs. He broke the UCLA freshman home run record ... SR OF Adam Berry is one of the semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy given to the top player in college baseball ... Head coach Gary Adams picked up his 900th win as the Bruins' skipper this season. He has a 922-761-7 (.548) at UCLA ... Final Leaders (Offense): batting average, stolen bases - Ben Francisco (.368, 20); runs, hits, triples, stolen bases - Ryan Rasmussen (52, 70, 2, 20); hits, doubles, on-base percentage - Josh Arhart (70, 18, .427); home runs, slugging percentage - Whisler (18, .684); home runs, RBI, total bases - Berry (18, 50, 127). USC (37-24 Overall, 17-7 Pac-10, 1st Place)
USC lost to Stanford twice and was eliminated from the tournament ... With the wins in their first-round regional, the Trojans now have a 204-74 (.734) all-time postseason record. The squad is 16-5 in regional action in the last four years with four of the five losses coming at Super Regionals against Stanford ... The Trojans finished the season with a 25-11 streak and 37-24 overall record, after starting the season with a 12-13 mark ... USC won back-to-back Pac-10 Championships for the first time since 1995 and 1996. It was the fourth title for the Trojans in the last eight years and the 38th championship in school history ... JR C Alberto Concepcion was named the 2002 Pac-10 Player of the Year. Concepcion hit .363 with 85 hits and 149 total bases ... SR CF Brian Barre, FR DH Joey Metropoulos, SR 1B Bill Peavey and JR RHP Anthony Reyes earned All-Pac-10 honors, while JR Cory Campos, JR Anthony Lunetta, SO Michael Moon and JR Nick Mosich were named honorable mention ... Concepcion, Barre, Metropoulos, Campos and JR RF Travis McAndrews were named to the first-round regional All-Tournament team ... Head coach Mike Gillespie recorded his 1,000 game coaching at USC in the first-round regional game against Cal State Northridge ... On April 2 USC registered its 600th victory at Dedeaux Field, which opened in 1974. USC has averaged over 21 wins at Dedeaux Field in the last nine seasons. The team went 15-8 at home this year and had only 23 games on its home schedule ... The Trojans ha offensive highs and lows this season. On Feb. 23 USC defeated UCLA 26-4, producing the highest output of runs in the all-time series against the Bruins. The number tied the mark for the third-highest number of runs in school history. On Mar. 19, USC took its worst loss ever at the hands of Loyola Marymount, losing 31-7. The loss produced three school records including most runs allowed in a game, largest margin of defeat and most hits allowed (27) ... WASHINGTON (33-27-1 Overall, 15-9 Pac-10, T3rd Place)
Washington lost to Texas Tech and Rice and was eliminated from the tournament ... The Huskies had returned to the tournament for the first time since 1998. They reached a winner-take-all regional final for the third time in the last eight years ... The Huskies finished the season with 30 wins for the first time since 1999. They won at least 26 games for the seventh consecutive season and 12th time in the last 13 years ... UW finished the regular season strong, winning 10 of its last 15 games ... SR RHP Shawn Kohn led the Pac-10 this season with nine complete games. He went 11-5 on the season and tied for the school's record for most wins ... Washington placed two Huskies on the All-Pac-10 squad with JR RF Tyler Davidson and SR RHP Shawn Kohn earning the honors. SR 3B Michael Done, JR CF Jay Garthwaite, FR C Aaron Hathaway, SO 2B Greg Isaacson, FR 1B Kyle Larsen, JR SS Tila Reynolds and JR RHP Sean White were named honorable mention ... UW ranks fifth in the Pac-10 in batting and pitching with a .304 average and 5.40 ERA. The Huskies are fourth in fielding percentage (.65) and lead the Conference with 96 stolen bases ... Washington State improved on last season's 15-39 overall record, but finished with the same Conference mark from a year ago. The Cougars' 21 wins are the most since the Pac-10 began full league play in 2000 ... WSU posted a 15-10 (.600) record against non-conference foes ... WSU was the fourth best hitting club in the Pac-10 with a .308 batting average ... SR 2B Bookie Gates was named to the All-Pac-10 team. JR RHP Eddie Bonine, FR SS Derek Bruce, SO OF Justin Hart, SR LF Evan Hecker, JR RHP Brandon Hundt and JR INF Jeff LaRue received honorable mention honors ...
