OSU Adds Six In Women's Swimming
June 14, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State has signed six women's swimmers to national letters of intent, OSU head coach Mariusz Podkoscielny announced Friday. Kristi Kuhmley, Danielle Kinney, Christina Kinney, Ashleigh Thomas, Ausra Pacebutaite and Leah Schaab will join the program in the fall.
Kuhmley is a middle distance/distance swimmer from Durban, South Africa. Danielle and Christina Kinney are twin sisters from Gresham, Ore.; Danielle competes in middle distance and distance freestyle events, and Christina swims butterfly, individual medley and freestyle events. Ashleigh Thomas, from Uxbridge, Ontario specializes in backstroke and freestyle sprinting events. Pacebutaite, from Vilnius, Lithuania, was the Lithuanian national champion in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke and also competes in sprint freestyle events. Schaab, of Calgary, Alberta swims butterfly and individual medley events.
'I'm pretty excited for next year,' Podkoscielny said. 'We are returning everybody except one swimmer that scored points at the Pac-10 Championships and have added six outstanding recruits.'
Oregon State is coming off perhaps its best season ever in 2001-2002. The Beavers placed seventh at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships and finished a school-best 31st at the NCAA Championships behind the All-America performances of Naya Higashijima and Birte Steven.
The six recruits bring OSU's roster up to 19 and provide a blend of local, national and international talent. Six of the Beavers are from Oregon high schools, six are from California or Nevada, two are from Canada, two are from Germany, and there is one each from Japan, Lithuania and South Africa.
Podkoscielny - a native of Gdansk, Poland - said his extensive international contacts don't necessarily make it easier to recruit internationally.
'I'm sure once swimmers come here it helps a little bit,' Podkoscielny said. 'The reason why we (recruit internationally) is because we want to make Oregon State better, and kids these days are a lot more educated in what they want to do and where they want to go.'
