Bergquist & Pappas Named Academic All-Americans

June 19, 2002

STAMFORD, Conn. - A pair of University of Oregon student-athletes, redshirt seniors Adam Bergquist and Billy Pappas, were honored Wednesday to the 15-man Verizon Academic All-America First Team for Men's Track & Field and Cross Country.

Bergquist, an exercise and movement science graduated with a 3.99 GPA, and was one of the team's top distance runners this season. The Boulder, Colo., native took eighth in the 5K in the recent Pacific-10 Conference Championships (14:36.17), and ranked first on the team in the 3K indoors (NCAA prov., 8:10.35) and second in the 5K outdoors (14:14.02). Last fall, he was the team's MVP in cross country after ranking second on the team in the Pac-10 (11th), Western Regional (11th,) and NCAA Championships (60th). Bergquist was also a first-team regional selection this season.

Pappas, a psychology graduate with a 3.61 GPA, made his second NCAA Championships decathlon appearance three weeks ago (11th, 7,514), and led Oregon in the event this season (NCAA auto., 7,532 points) and in the long jump (23-5 1/2w). The Azalea, Ore., native won the Pac-10 decathlon title this season (PR 7,532), and ended his league career as a three-time scorer in the decathlon and twice in the long jump. All-time for the Ducks, he ranks ninth in the decathlon with this year's personal best, and was an All-American in last year's NCAA finale (eighth, 7,488). He received first-team regional Academic All-America honors in both 2001 and 2002.

Thanks to the duo's honors, Oregon was the only school nationally in the category to have two first-team recipients, and the Ducks were also the only Pac-10 recipients. The first team featured an upper-class heavy list that included 14 seniors or graduate students among the 15 selections.

The three Verizon Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member Collegiate Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA). To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. The Duck duo were eligible for the honor after being selected recently to the Verizon Regional All-Academic First Team.
