Three Cougars Receive Academic Honors

June 20, 2002

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Three members of Washington State University's 2002 baseball team have been named to the Pacific-10 Conference academic team, announced this week by Tom Hansen, commissioner of the Pac-10.

Named to the first team were sophomore catcher Brandon Reddinger and outfielder Collin Henderson, while pitcher Garrett Alwert was an honorable mention choice.

Henderson, a sophomore, boasts a 3.60 grade point average in sports management. A three-year starter for the Cougar football team, the Puyallup native hit .297 for the Cougars last spring, starting 41 games. He also has been accorded Pac-10 academic honors in football twice and last fall was named to the CoSIDA/Verizon all-district first team.

Reddinger, who started 17 games and played in 36, hit .213 for the Cougars while sharing duties behind the plate with Jon Baeder. The Kennewick native and Kamiakin High grad has a 3.90 grade point average in two years at WSU.

Alwert, also from Puyallup, finished the year with a 2-3 record, throwing 61.1 innings, the third most among Cougar pitchers. The junior hurler made 10 starts and was used in relief three times while picking up two saves. Alwert has a 3.18 grade point average in pre-business administration.
