Select Members of the UCLA Men's Track & Field Team Compete This Weekend at the USA Senior and Junior National Meets

Eighteen UCLA men (seven) and women (11) track & field athletes willcompete this weekend (June 21-23) at the 2002 USA Senior and JuniorNational T & F Championships, held at the Cobb Track and Angell Field onthe Stanford University campus in Palo Alto.
This is the first time in USA track & field history the nationalSenior and Junior (between the ages of 14-19 in the calendar year 2002)meets are being held on the same dates at the same site. The JuniorNationals will take place Friday-Saturday (June 21-22) and the Senior meetwill be held Friday-Sunday (June 21-23).
The Senior meet will be televised on Sunday (June 23), from 2:30-4p.m. PDT on ESPN 2.
Athletes winning their individual events in the Senior meet will earna spot on the Team USA roster for the 2002 IAAF World Cup in Athletics,Sept. 21-22 in Madrid, Spain. The Junior Meet will serve as the selectioncompetition for the 2002 World Junior T & F Championships, July 16-21 inKingston, Jamaica.
Moser, from Huntington Beach HS, will compete in the discus final onSaturday. He completed his UCLA career at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor, placingthird (198-3) in the discus. For the last two seasons he was the highestplacing American in the discus at the NCAA Outdoor and he ended his Bruincareer as a five-time All-American.
Lipscomb, from West Covina (South Hills HS), who qualified in the200m at both the 2002 NCAA Outdoor and Indoor meets, on Saturday will runin the 200m first round, with the 200m semifinals and final set for Sunday(June 23).
The Bruin men's program will be represented by several prominent UCLAalumni. Leading the Bruin alums will be ? Jesse (Jess) Strutzel, who wontwo NCAA Indoor titles during his UCLA career (2000, 800m, 1:46.57; 1999,distance medley relay, anchor, 9:33.17) in the 800m; Meb Keflezighi, theAmerican record-holder in the 10,000m (27:13.98, 2001) who won four NCAAtitles while at UCLA, in the 5000m and 10,000m; Scott Slover (No. 2 on theall-time Bruin chart, 18-7.25) and Brian McLaughlin (No. 4 on the all-timeUCLA list, 18-0.25i) in the pole vault; John Godina, the defending Worldand U. S. shot put champion, in the shot put and discus and Josh Johnson,son of Bruin great and 1960 Olympic gold medal winner in the decathlonRafer Johnson, in the javelin.
Bruin Men at Junior Nationals (June 21-22)
On Friday in the discus, freshman Jason Rider (Murietta/MuriettaValley HS), who at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor in the discus was 17th (176-9),finished sixth (186-6, personal-best) in the discus, followed by freshmanredshirt Jeremy Silverman (Annville, PA/Annville-Cleona), who placedseventh (178-6). Freshman Jonathan Williams (Los Angeles/Notre Dame HS),who tied for seventh at the Pac-10 meet in the 110m hurdles (14.76), willcompete in the 110m hurdle semifinals, with the final set for Saturday.Freshman Ben Aragon, who placed seventh (3:48.89, personal-best) in the1500m at the Pac-10, had the No. 8 mark (3:53.91) in the 1500m qualifyingand advances to Saturday's final.
On Saturday, Silverman and redshirt freshman Jake Knight(Riverside/Rubidoux HS) will compete in the shot put final.
