Bruin Alum Meb Keflezighi Wins 10,000m; Moser Seventh In Discus

Individual event winners by UCLA alumni Mebrahtom Keflezighi in the10,000m, Gail Devers in the 100m hurdles and Shelia Burrell in theheptathlon highlighted the recently concluded (Friday-Sunday, June 21-23)USA Senior and Junior Track & Field Championships held at StanfordUniversity's Cobb Track and Angell Field.
This was the first time in USA Track & Field history the Senior andJunior (between the ages of 14-19 in the calendar year 2002) national meetswere held on same dates at the same site.
Athletes who won their individual events (Devers/Burrell/Keflezighi)in the Senior meet will earn a spot on the Team USA roster for the 2002IAAF World Cup in Athletics, Sept. 21-22 in Madrid, Spain. The Junior Meet(top two finishers; Monique Henderson, 400m/Briona Reynolds, SP/JeremySilverman, SP) will serve as the selection competition for the 2002 WorldJunior T & F Championships, July 16-21 in Kingston, Jamaica.
Current Bruin Men at the Senior Meet
Moser placed seventh (199-3) in the discus. Moser ended his Bruincareer this spring as a five-time All-American. For the last two NCAAOutdoors, he was the highest placing American collegian in the discus(including a third-place finish this spring, 198-3).
Lipscomb ran a 20.80 in qualifying and did not reach the 200m final.As a senior in 2002, he qualified in the 200m at both the NCAA Outdoor andIndoor championships.
Current Bruin Men at the Junior Meet
The Bruin men had five competitors in the Junior meet. With hissecond-place finish in the shot put, redshirt freshman Jeremy Silverman(Annville, PA/Annville Cleona HS) will represent the U. S. at the upcomingWorld Junior Championships in the shot put.
Here are the Bruin men's Junior results:
-Silverman was second in the shot put (63-5, personal-best) andseventh in the discus (178-6).
-redshirt freshman Jake Knight (Riverside/Rubidoux) was fourth in theshot put (61-9.50).
-freshman Jonathan Williams placed fifth in the 110m hurdles (14.47).At the 2002 Pac-10, Williams was seventh in the 110m hurdles (14.76).
-freshman Jason Rider (Murietta/Murietta Valley HS) finished sixth inthe discus (186-6, personal-best). At the 2002 NCAA Outdoor as a truefreshman, Rider placed 17th in the discus (176-9).
-freshman Ben Aragon (Santee/West Hills) placed sixth in the 1500m(3:54.17, 3:53.91Q). As a true freshman at the 2002 Pac-10, Aragon wasseventh in the 1500m (3:48.98, personal-best).
Bruin Men Alumni at the Senior Meet
The Bruin men alumni were led by distance runner MebrahtomKeflezighi, a four-time NCAA Champion during his Bruin career, and throwerJohn Godina, a five-time NCAA winner.
-Keflezighi, the current American record holder in the 10,000m(27:13.98, 2001, set on the Stanford track) and the 2000 Olympic Trialschampion, won the 10,000m (27:41.68) and placed second in the 5000m(13:30.05). With his victory in the 10,000m, Keflezighi will represent theU. S. at the IAAF World Cup.
-Godina, who was the defending champion in the shot put, placedsecond in both the shot put (71-11) and discus (207-3).
-Jesse (Jess) Strutzel, who won two NCAA Indoor titles during hisBruin career, placed fourth (1:48.36) in the 800m.
-Josh Johnson, son of Bruin great and 1960 Olympic gold medal winnerin the decathlon Rafer Johnson, finished eighth in the javelin (238-1).
-Brian McLaughlin, No. 4 all-time (18-0.25i) on the UCLA chart,placed ninth in the pole vault (17-10.25).
-Scott Slover, No. 2 all-time (18-7.25) on the Bruin chart,no-heighted in the polevault.
