June 24, 2002
BERKELEY - California head coach Caren Horstmeyer announced today that junior college All-American Nihan Anaz (pronounced knee-HON uh-NOZ) has signed to play basketball for the Golden Bears beginning with the 2002-03 season.
'We're thrilled that Nihan is joining the Cal basketball program this season,' said Horstmeyer, 'and are confident that she will have an immediate impact. Nihan is a leader by example because she is so skilled and talented, and she makes big plays. She is an excellent shooter and passer and brings maturity to our team.'
The 5-9 shooting guard from Istanbul, Turkey, has two years of eligibility remaining after playing the 2000-01 season at the University of South Carolina and the 2001-02 campaign at Weatherford College in Weatherford, Texas.
Last season at Weatherford, Anaz ranked second in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference in scoring (21.2 ppg) and assists (7.5 apg) on her way to being selected honorable mention National Junior College Athletic Associate (NJCAA) All-America, first team all-conference and all-region.
Weatherford finished the season with a 28-6 record and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NJCAA national tournament. Additionally, the Coyotes won the conference title, the Region V championship and finished the season ranked No. 20 in the nation (rankings released prior to the national tournament).
As a freshman at South Carolina, Anaz played in all 28 games and made 13 starts. She averaged 9.1 points, 2.4 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game and shot 42.1 percent from the floor, including 31.6 percent from three-point range.
Anaz joins fall recruits Sarah Pool, Renee Wright and Timea Invanyi as the Bears newcomers for the 2002-03 season.
