Curtis Borchardt, Casey Jacobsen Selected in First Round of 2002 NBA Draft
June 26, 2002
Borchardt, who set a single season record for blocked shots in 2001-02 for the Stanford Cardinal, was drafted in the first round (18th overall pick) by the Orlando Magic during the 2002 NBA Draft. But Borchardt didn't last long with the Magic. Borchardt was then traded to the Utah Jazz for Ryan Humphrey, the Notre Dame forward who had been drafted by the Jazz.
'I am excited and thrilled to go to Phoenix. I am anxious to get rolling.'
Jacobsen was taken in the first round (22nd pick overall) by the Phoenix Suns.
Borchardt and Jacobsen become the seventh and eighth players in Stanford basketball history to be first round NBA choices. It is also the first time in school history that Stanford has produced two NBA first round selections in the same year.
Borchardt was bothered by a foot injury during his freshman and sophomore seasons, but enjoyed an outstanding junior campaign without injury in 2001-02. Borchardt averaged 16.9 points and 11.4 rebounds per game in gaining All-America honorable mention honors, and first team All Pac-10 status. Borchardt also led the conference in blocked shots. The 7-foot, 240-pound center credits his father for much of his success.
'Since I started to play sports at eight years of age, my father taught me how to compete,' said Borchardt of his father, Jon, who played nine seasons in the NFL. 'He has been there to answer the questions and to guide me along.'
Jacobsen, numerous times an All-America in three seasons at Stanford, was a three-time All Pac-10 selection. Jacobsen, this past season, led the Pac-10 in scoring at 21.9 ppg. Jacobsen, a 6-foot-6, 215-pound guard, ended his three-year Cardinal career with 1,723 points, third-best in school history. Jacobsen's name appears in the Cardinal record book 55 times.
'I am excited and thrilled to go to Phoenix,' said Jacobsen. 'I am anxious to get rolling.'
Borchardt and Jacobsen were two of three Pac-10 players drafted in the first round. Freddie Jones of Oregon was drafted in the first round by the Indiana Pacers.
