Cari DuBois Named Women's Gymnastics Coach
July 8, 2002
BERKELEY - Cari DuBois, an assistant coach at West Virginia the past seven years and a member of the Golden Bear staff from 1994-96, has been named head women's gymnastics coach at the University of California, Athletic Director Steve Gladstone announced today.
'I'm ecstatic to be coming back to California,' DuBois said. 'This is a great opportunity to be a head coach. There is a lot of talent at Cal. We just need to put it all together. My goal is to have us consistently finish in the Top 3 at Pac-10s, qualify for regionals and have an impact on the national level.'
DuBois replaces Trina Tinti, who resigned this past February.
While at West Virginia, DuBois served under head coach Linda Burdette and helped the Mountaineers to a pair of 12th-place national finishes (1999, 2000). Last season, West Virginia compiled a 25-8 record and placed third in the NCAA Southeast Region championships.
Under DuBois' tutelage, three Mountaineers were named regional Gymnast of the Year, while Danielle Lilly became the first WVU freshman to win an NCAA regional title (beam, 1997). During her tenure, West Virginia averaged more than 20 wins per season and captured four league championships.
At Cal, DuBois was an assistant on Alfie Mitchell's staff for three seasons in the mid-1990s. While with the Bears, she coached 1994 NCAA qualifier Candace Kwok and helped the team to a 37-20 record.
Prior to her years in Berkeley, DuBois spent a year instructing at the National Gymnastics Village in Colorado Springs, Colo. She handled choreography and spotting at the Gymnastics Village, working with level 10 gymnasts aged 8-16.
DuBois, who is also a certified Level 10 judge and meet director, worked five years at the International Gymnastics Camp in Stroudsburg, Pa., before her move to Colorado.
The St. Joseph, Mo., native is a 1992 graduate of Ball State, where she was a four-year letterwinner and three-time all-conference selection. DuBois received her bachelor's degree in exercise science and wellness from Ball State and a Master's degree in athletic coaching education from West Virginia.
