Shields Advances to Discus Final at World Junior Championships

University of Arizona sophomore-to-be Sean Shields advanced to the finalsof the discus throw at the 2002 IAAF/Coca-Cola World Junior ChampionshipsWednesday night.
Shields had a throw of 188-feet, 6-inches (57.74m) on his second attemptof the qualification round to advance to Thursday's final. His throw wasthe eighth best in the qualifying round.
Tuesday, Sheilds finished second in the shot put final at thechampionships. He tossed the six-kilogram international shot 67-feet,4-inches (20.54m) on his fifth attempt of the final round.
Edis Elkasevic of Croatia won the event with a throw of 70-5 3/4 (21.47m),setting a World Junior Record in the shot put. Finland's Mika Vasarafinished third, just behind Shields, with a throw of 67-3 1/4 (20.50m).
