USA World Team Dismantles Chinese Taipei 12-0 In Canada Cup Action

Surrey, B.C., Canada - The USA World team dismantled 1996 Olympic qualifier Chinese Taipei, 12-0, in five innings to move on in championship bracket play at the 2002 Canada Cup.
Stacey Nuveman (La Verne, Calif.) and Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo, Calif.) led the way for an explosive USA offense, combining for seven hits, four home runs and nine RBI. Nuveman went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI, while Mendoza went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI.
Natasha Watley (Irvine, Calif.) and Leah O'Brien-Amico (Chino Hills, Calif.) led off the first with back-to-back infield singles. Watley advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single through the right side by Nuveman. O'Brien-Amico scored on a single to left center by Lisa Fernandez (Long Beach, Calif.)
In the top of the second, O'Brien-Amico began a two-out rally with a line-drive home run to right field. Mendoza followed with a singled through the left side and scored on Nuveman's first home run.
Mendoza hit her first of two home runs in the top of the fourth to score three of the four runs in the inning. Michele Smith (Califon, N.J.) drove in the final run of the inning with a single to left field.
Nuveman and Mendoza combined for two home runs in the fifth to give the USA a decisive 12-0 lead.
Lori Harrigan (Las Vegas, Nev.) went the distance for the USA World Team to pick up her second win of the tournament. In the shutout, Harrigan allowed only three hits, while striking out 10.
Four players from the USA World Team were honored for their performance in pool play and named to the Canada Cup All-Star team. They were Lisa Fernandez, Natasha Watley, Lovie Jung and Stacey Nuveman.
