BERKELEY, CA - The University of California baseball team has signed Scott Cheo, a 6-3, 225 pound powerhitting first baseman/outfielder from Saddleback College, it was announced by Cal head coach David Esquer.
As a junior college sophomore last spring, Cheo batted .398 with a school record 23 home runs and 76 RBI for the Gauchos. In two seasons at Saddleback College, he had a career batting average of .373 with 25 doubles, two triples and 38 home runs. Cheo also scored 94 runs and tallied 116 RBI in earning first team all-conference honors in both 2001 and 2002.
Cheo graduated from Capistrano Valley High School in 2000, earning first team All-South Coast League honors in baseball as a junior and senior.
'We are excited to have one of the top junior college powerhitters on the West Coast and in the country,' said Esquer. 'Scott should have an immediate impact on our program and we are fortunate to have him. We look for him to be a middle of the batting order type of player for us.'
