Aug. 6, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The 2002 Arizona State Volleyball team was picked sixth in the annual Pac-10 Preseason Coaches poll that was released today from the conference office in Walnut Creek, Calif. Defending national champion Stanford is picked No. 1 in the poll, with USC, Arizona and UCLA rounding out the top four.
Coming off a disappointing 10-16 overall record and 5-13 mark in league play (7th) last year, the Sun Devils return 10 letter winners and six starters from last year. In addition to returning starters (Cheryl Anglin, Kim Mehlhorn, Courtney Blocher, Julia Leddy, Alicia Akporiaye, Jodi Smith), ASU adds two freshmen and 2001 AVCA Junior College Player of the Year Juliana Escobar.
'I am extremely excited to see this team on the court and I really expect them to move up from where we are picked in the preseason,' said head coach Patti Snyder-Park, who will be coaching her 14th and final year in 2002. 'We are a veteran squad now with six juniors and three seniors. The freshmen that we depended on two years ago are now juniors and ready to really step it up.'
Arizona State opens the 2002 campaign Sept. 6-7 with a three-match tournament vs. South Carolina Pacific and Creighton at the Carolina Classic (Columbia, S.C.) The annual alumnae match unofficially kicks off the 30th Anniversary of Sun Devil Volleyball Aug. 30 at Wells Fargo Arena (7 p.m.).
