Women's Volleyball Picked No. 3 In AVCA Preseason Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - The USC women's volleyball team enters the 2002 season ranked No. 3 in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll released on Aug. 12. The Women of Troy earned two first place votes and a total of 1445 points to earn the spot.

Defending NCAA Division I champion Stanford pulled in 54 of a possible 65 first-place votes to easily out-distance second-place Nebraska by 108 points (1,610 to 1,502).

Hawai'i, ranked 13th in the final 2001 USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll, moved up to the fourth spot and Long Beach State was voted fifth to complete this season's Top 5.

USC, 25-4 in 2001, returns five of six starters this year, including AVCA All-Americans Katie Olsovsky (2001) and April Ross (2000). The Trojans were an NCAA Regional semifinalist in 2001. USC has 12 letterwinners returning to the 2002 squad with the main loss being Jennifer Pahl.

Rounding out the Top 10 are No. 6 Arizona (25-5), No. 7 Florida (28-2), No. 8 Pepperdine (23-4), No. 9 Ohio State (27-4) and No. 10 Wisconsin (27-4).

Stanford, USC and Arizona were joined by No. 11 UCLA to give the Pac-10 four schools ranked among the top 25.

USC opens its 2002 schedule on the road at the Ball State Nike Classic (Aug. 31-Sept. 2) and BYU Mizuno Invitational (Sept. 5-6), before its first home match on Friday, Sept. 13, at 6 p.m. against the Cardinal & Gold Alumni. According to the early poll, the Trojans will face five top-10 opponents (No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 Nebraska, No. 6 Arizona, No. 7 Florida, No. 8 Pepperdine) this season.

The Women of Troy were also ranked No. 3 in the Volleyball magazine preseason poll.
