Men's Basketball Pounds Sydney in Australia Tour Opener

Aug. 18, 2002

Corvallis, Ore. - Senior forward Philip Ricci made 9 of 11 field goal attempts en route to a 23-point game as the Oregon State University men's basketball team and first-year head coach Jay John made their unofficial debut with a 93-72 victory over the Sydney Kings Sunday at the Niagara Arena. The game was the first of six to be played over the next week in Australia.

As a team, the Beavers shot .521 from the field, including .537 in the first half to build a 54-37 halftime advantage. Oregon State also forced 23 turnovers, and limited the Kings to .397 from the field.

'We showed no signs of jet lag at all, we came out very aggressive,' John said. 'I was very impressed with our senior leadership. All four seniors played with great poise and with toughness.'

Four other Beavers joined Ricci in scoring in double figures, senior guard Jimmie Haywood had 17 points, senior forward Brian Jackson totaled 15, sophomore guard J.S. Nash had 13, and sophomore forward David Lucas added 12. Haywood hit 4 of 7 three-point field goal attempts to lead the team in the category, while sophomore swingman Floyd North III corralled a team-high 11 rebounds.

Junior forward Jarman Sample and sophomore center Derek Potter did not play in the game. Sample is expected to miss one or two more games with a groin injury and Potter is day-to-day with a hip injury.

The Kings were led by the 19 points from Gary Boodnakoff.

Oregon State returns to action Monday (U.S.) for a game against the Canberra Cannons at the Tugeranong Basketball Stadium in Canberra.
