Wildcats Open Second Week of Football Training Camp with Scrimmage
Aug. 18, 2002
The University of Arizona football team put on the pads for an 80-play scrimmage Saturday evening in Arizona Stadium. Under Mackovic's direction, the Wildcat offense produced four touchdown passes, and the defense had six sacks during the two-hour workout.
'What we played tonight was the equivalent of a half of a game, and based on the running at the end, we are not in game condition yet,' Mackovic said. 'We have to get ready to play an entire game, so we have a lot of work to do this week. Every player has to push to make improvements this week.'
'The offensive line did a good job in spots, but we really need to improve in our power running game. The defense also gave up some big plays. Our run defense was okay inside, but we need to continue to work on our perimeter defense. And, we have a lot of work to do in our kicking game,' Mackovic added.
Senior Jason Johnson, Arizona's No. 1 quarterback, completed 5-of-9 passes for 57 yards. Redshirt freshman Nic Costa completed 6-of-13 passes for 90 yards and had a 24-yard touchdown strike to junior wide receiver Andrae Thurman.
Freshman Ryan O'Hara completed 6-of-16 passes for 111 yards and had three touchdowns. O'Hara had a 2-yard touchdown pass to freshman tight end Matt Padron. O'Hara then hit freshman wide receiver Biren Ealy for a 33-yard touchdown score. The freshman quarterback closed the scrimmage with an 18-yard touchdown toss to redshirt freshman wide receiver Josh Duncan, and O'Hara then rushed up the middle to complete the 2-point conversion play.
'The most important thing about a day like tonight is that some people show what they're made of,' Mackovic said. 'I was especially impressed with Ryan O'Hara who showed that he has good mobility and an eye for getting the ball to his receivers. Gainus Scott and Mike Bell also showed some things tonight as well.'
Arizona's quarterbacks worked to spread the wealth by throwing to 10 different receivers during the scrimmage.
Thurman led the Wildcat receiving corps with three receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt freshman halfback Mike Bell had three catches for 29 yards, and Ealy had two catches for 48 yards. Junior halfback Clarence Farmer had two catches for 11 yards, and senior wide receiver Bobby Wade caught a 29-yard pass from Johnson early in the scrimmage.
Redshirt freshman halfback Gainus Scott led UA's running backs with eight carries for 32 yards, and Bell finished with 23 yards on seven carries.
On the defensive side, the Wildcat defensive units tallied a total of six sacks on the evening. Freshman defensive end Marcus Smith led the squad with two sacks for a loss of 26 yards. Junior linebacker Matt Molina, sophomore defensive tackle Carlos Williams, junior cornerback Luis Nunez and redshirt freshman Jake Belshe each contributed a sack apiece. Sophomore Tony Wingate, who finished with two tackles, came up with the defense's only turnover of the night, as he intercepted a Nic Costa pass and tacked on a 40-yard return.
Molina tallied five tackles, including three solo hits, and junior strong safety Anthony Fulcher had four hits, including two tackles for a loss of four yards. Redshirt freshman linebacker Nick McCalmont added four tackles, while freshman tackle Carl Tuitavuki and freshman free safety Lamon Means each had three hits. Carlos Williams had three tackles, and junior defensive back Gary Love had two hits and broke up two passes.
Senior placekicker Sean Keel converted on field goal attempts from 34 and 45 yards but missed from 43 and 47 yards. Freshman placekicker Nicholas Folk converted on both of his point-after-touchdown attempts. Folk also made a 36-yard field goal attempt but missed from 43 yards.
UA's offensive and defensive units combined for 10 penalties. The offense had seven for 70 yards, while the defense had three for 35 yards.
The Wildcats have five days of training camp remaining on the schedule before beginning game week preparations for Arizona's season home opener against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks on Saturday, Aug. 31 in Arizona Stadium.
