Men's Basketball Falls to the Canberra Cannons

Aug. 19, 2002

Canberra, Australia - Mick Hill scored 24 points to lead the Canberra Cannons of the National Basketball League of Australia to a 80-72 victory over the touring Oregon State University men's basketball team Monday night. The game was the second of six the Beavers will play on the tour.

Canberra used an 11-0 run late in the game to rally past the Beavers. The Cannons outscored first-year head coach Jay John's team 24-14 in the final period of the four-quarter game. The Beavers shot 53 percent from the field in the first half and scored the first nine points of the contest, but fell to 34 percent in the second half.

'The difference in the game was the first two-to-three minutes of the fourth quarter,' John said. 'We had four turnovers in our first five possessions of the quarter, and Canberra hit three three-point field goals during that stretch. We just couldn't climb back after that.'

The Beavers were led by senior forward Philip Ricci, who scored 22 points, grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds, and added four blocked shots. Senior guard Jimmie Haywood and sophomore forward David Lucas each added 14 points, while sophomore forward Floyd North III had 12 points and 11 boards. Lucas has hit 12 of 13 field goal attempts in the two games.

'I thought we were a little tired late in the game, and some of that is due to being short-handed,' John added. 'We have two significant players out of our lineup, and Brian (Jackson) is a little banged up. Overall, we competed well and hopefully we can continue that trend tonight.'

Oregon State used just nine players in the game for the second consecutive night. Junior forward Jarman Sample and sophomore center Derek Potter are nursing injuries and are listed day-to-day by athletic trainer Michael Sandago. The lack of players forced Haywood, North III, and Ricci to all play in excess of 35 minutes. Beaver incoming freshmen Kevin Field, Justin Holt, and Lamar Hurd are ineligible to compete in the summer tour.

The Beavers play their third game in three days Tuesday against the Australia Institute of Sport in Canberra.
