Aug. 20, 2002

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's soccer team improved to 3-0 in its preseason European Tour with a 5-1 win over Rapide Wezemaal, the Belgian Champions. Sophomore Natalie Sanderson (Ventura, CA) led the Cardinal with two goals and an assist.

Stanford jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead behind Sanderson's two goals. Sanderson netted her first goal six minutes into the match and nine minutes later, connected again off assists from Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) and Katie Wayland (Concord, MA).

Wayland extended the Cardinal's lead in the 35th minute on a Heidi Herrick (Falmouth, ME) pass. Senior Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) then found the back of the net to give Stanford the 4-0 advantage before the break.

Rapide Wezemaal added a goal off a corner kick to get them within 4-1. Herrick then iced the game at the 65-minute mark with a goal, giving Stanford a 5-1 victory.

The Cardinal continue their tour through Holland, Germany and Belgium with a match against the Dutch National Team in Geldrop on Wednesday evening.
