Aug. 22, 2002

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's soccer team dropped their final match of its Preseason European Tour on Thursday night, 3-1, to FCR Duisburg, a German Club Team. Freshman Leah Tapscott (Madison, WI) scored the lone Cardinal goal.

Third-year head coach Andy Nelson played a young team against the experienced German Club Champions, starting eight freshmen and sophomores.

The German team struck first, scoring in the first minute of play. After a 1-0 German halftime lead, FCR Duisburg found the back of the net to go up 2-0 in the 48th minute. Stanford got on the board in the 65th minute when Tapscott finished off an assist from junior Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA).

Down 2-1, the Cardinal tried to make a comeback but fell short when the German Club Team netted another goal at the 80-minute mark.

The Cardinal return home with a 4-1 mark and outscored opponents 19-2. Stanford will open its 2002 season at Santa Clara on Friday, August 30. First kick is set for 7:30 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium.
