Short-handed Team Downs Brisbane

Aug. 22, 2002

Brisbane, Australia - Philip Ricci scored 18 points and teammate Brian Jackson added a tour-high 16 points to lead the Oregon State University men's basketball team to a 71-64 victory Thursday over the Brisbane Bullets of the Australian National Basketball League. The game was played at the Auchenflower Arena in Brisbane.

Beaver first-year head coach Jay John used just eight players in the game, which included the first action for junior forward Jarman Sample. Sample, who had four points and three rebounds in 12 minutes, missed the previous three games with a groin injury. The team is still without the services of sophomore center Derek Potter, who is nursing a hip injury. The lack of players forced senior guard Jimmie Haywood to play all 40 minutes.

Oregon State held the Bullets to 33 percent shooting from the field, and held a 22-14 advantage in points off turnovers.

Brisbane was led by the 19 points of Damien Ryan, the 1999 NBL Rookie of the Year. The Bullets' roster also includes former University of Cincinnati standout Bobby Brannen and former Oklahoma State Cowboy Randy Rutherford. Brannen had 14 points and Rutherford added nine.

Oregon State, now 3-1 on the tour, plays its final two games in the coastal city of Cairns. The Beavers will face the Kuiyam Pride of the Australian Basketball League Friday and finish with the NBL member Cairns Taipans Sunday.
