UCLA Soccer Teams Ranked In Top 15 In Pre-Season Coaches' Poll

Aug. 22, 2002

The UCLA men's and women's soccer teams have each earned Top 15 placements in the NSCAA/adidas Pre-Season National Rankings.

The Bruin women, which advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2001, are ranked third behind defending national champion Santa Clara and runner-up North Carolina. The Bruins finished with a 20-3 record last year and a No. 5 final national ranking. UCLA will face six teams in the Top 25, including home matches against Top 10 teams from Santa Clara (No. 1), Virginia (No. 6) and Penn State (No. 8). The Bruins also meet up with ranked Pac-10 foes Stanford (No. 12), California (No. 15) and Washington (No. 22).

UCLA's men, which posted a 12-7-4 record and advanced to the NCAA third round a year ago, earned a No. 13 pre-season ranking, two notches up from their final ranking from 2001. The Bruins also have a difficult schedule, with three Top 10 opponents in No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 St. John's and No. 7 Rutgers, as well as two other Top 25 foes in No. 12 Washington and No. 24 San Diego.

The UCLA women will host a scrimmage against No. 25 Pepperdine on Friday, Aug. 23 at Drake Stadium at 2:00 pm. The Bruin men travel to Saint Louis for an exhibition contest against the Billikens on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 7:00 pm CT. Both teams start regular season play on Friday, Aug. 30, with the women hosting San Diego at 2:00 pm and the men facing Boston University at Cal State Fullerton at 5:00 pm.
