Cougars Complete Double Days With Mock Scrimmage
Aug. 24, 2002
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State quarterback Jason Gesser completed 14 of 22 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns in the final preseason scrimmage for the Cougars Saturday afternoon.
Gesser connected on scoring strikes of 66, 30, and 33 yards on consecutive passes in the first quarter. Mike Bush, Jerome Riley, and Devard Darling were on the receiving end of the first three touchdowns, while freshman Marty Martin hauled in a 15-yarder for the final score.
Senior John Tippins was the most frequently used running back, toting the ball three times for 22 yards. Riley also contributed via the ground, picking up 13 yards on one carry. Lavell Anderson and Jermaine Green combined for seven yards on three attempts.
The defense gave up just one touchdown, which was framed by a turnover deep in Cougar territory. Junior D.D. Acholonu was a catalyst for the unit Saturday, recording two sacks and appearing in the scout team backfield on nearly every play. Freshman Adam Braidwood also tallied a sack.
Washington State begins the 2002 season next Saturday, Aug. 31 in the new Seattle Seahawks Stadium against Nevada.
