Benko Wins Pan Pac Gold In 200m Free
Aug. 27, 2002
Lindsay Benko held off a pair of Australians to win gold in the 200m free at the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships on Tuesday (Aug. 27) in Yokohama, Japan.
Benko touched in 1:58.74 while Aussie teammates Elka Graham and Giaan Rooney followed in 1:59.72 and 1:59.82. Benko was second at the 50, but had moved into the lead by the 100. Fellow American Diana Munz was fifth in 2:00.95.
'I was a little disappointed with the time, but you can't complain when you get the win,' Benko said. 'To be able to come back after what happened last summer with my knee is very gratifying for me.'
Benko suffered a freak knee injury last year before the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, shattering her kneecap during training.
Benko, who won silver in the 400m free, still has the 100m free to swim. Prelims and semifinals are Wednesday and the final is Thursday.
