As the 2002 season gets underway, five Pac-10 teams are ranked in the preseason polls, tying the ACC for the most Top-25 squads in the nation... Defending Pac-10 Champion UCLA checks in at No. 3/No. 9, followed by No. 12/No. 7 STANFORD, No. 15/No. 14 CALIFORNIA, No. 22/No. 12 WASHINGTON and NR/No. 22 ARIZONA STATE... The Cardinal hosts preseason No. 1 and National Champion Santa Clara Friday night in the 'Battle of the Bay,' while USC takes on NCAA runner-up and second-ranked North Carolina Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.... Both ARIZONA and California host tournaments this week.

Defending Conference Champion UCLA has been tabbed as the favorite to win the Pac-10 women's soccer title in a preseason vote of the head coaches. The Bruins received seven of 10 first-place votes, with STANFORD (3) the only other team to garner first-place support.

Just four points separate the third- through fifth-place teams, with WASHINGTON rounding out the top three with 68 points, narrowly edging ASU (65 pts.) and CALIFORNIA (64 pts.).

UCLA set a school single-season record with 20 wins in 2001, compiling an 8-1-0 league mark before beginning its NCAA Tournament run. The Bruins fell one win short of their second consecutive trip to the NCAA College Cup, losing in the quarterfinals to Florida, 1-0 in double overtime. STANFORD and WASHINGTON tied as Pac-10 runners-up with identical 6-2-1 conference records.

Last season, five Pac-10 teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament: CALIFORNIA, STANFORD, UCLA, USC, and WASHINGTON.
