Aug. 28, 2002

Junior Natalie Coughlin broke the U.S. Nationals record in the 200-meter freestyle today with a time of 1:58.20. The junior Golden Bear swimmer now has three wins in three consecutive days at the U.S. National Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Former Cal swimmer Haley Cope was the winner of the 50-meter free with a time of 25.48. On the men's side, senior Anthony Ervin finished second in the 50-meter free in 22.35. Sophomore John Dorr, swimming with his San Ramon club team, placed second in the 800-meter free relay (7:35.63).

In Tuesday's action, Coughlin set the world record in the 100-meter backstroke and became the first woman to swim the race in under one minute. Her record time of 59.58 broke China's Cihong He's 1994 mark of 1:00.16.

Thursday's schedule includes the men's and women's 100-meter free, men's 200-meter back, women's 200-meter breast and men's 400-meter individual medley. Slated for tomorrow's preliminaries include Ervin, Coughlin, Cope and Danielle Becks in the 100-meter free and Dorr in the 400-meter IM.

The championships, which take place from August 12-17, is used as a consideration for team selection to such events as the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships, 2003 World Championships and 2003 World University and Pan American Games.
