USC senior Erik Vendt finished strong at the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships, earning the silver medal in the 1500m freestyle on Thursday (Aug. 29) in Yokohama, Japan.

Vendt was the top American finisher in 15:02.24, just off his personal best (14:59.11). Australian Grant Hackett, the world record holder in the event, won in 14:41.65. American Larsen Jensen was third in 15:05.17.

It was Vendt's second silver of the competition, his first coming in the 400m IM.

Former Trojan Lindsay Benko won her fifth medal of the meet after anchoring the women's 400m medley relay to a silver. The unit of Natalie Coughlin, Amanda Beard, Jenny Thompson and Benko were less than a second off of the first-place Australians.

Benko also won gold in the 200m free, the 800m free relay and silvers in the 400m free and the 400m free relay.
