Aug. 30, 2002
TEMPE, Ariz. - A game with numerous scoring chances ended deadlocked 1-1 as Pepperdine (0-0-1) and Arizona State (0-0-1) each got their 2002 seasons underway. A crowd of 467 at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium saw Pepperdine get off 17 shots to ASU's 10 with Sun Devil goalie Kelly Fitzgerald putting in a strong performance with eight saves.
Elizabeth Bogus put the Sun Devils up a goal with less than five minutes to go in the first half. Kathleen Dely found Bogus with a penetrating pass that Bogus corralled and then got off a shot past Pepperdine goalie Teresa Montano for the lead. The goal came against the run of play for the Devils who saw themselves outshot in the first half by a 10-3 margin. Bogus had six shots in her debut as a Sun Devil.
The Waves evened the score in the 73rd minute when Jenna Ainsworth put it by Fitzgerald from five yards out. Jenna Fodor got an assist on Ainsworth's goal. Both teams were feeling the 100 degree heat in overtime as ASU managed to get the only shot in either extra period. The Sun Devils began the season shorthanded, with two team members, Manya Makoski and Stephanie Ebner, competing for the U.S. U-19 team in the Championship of the U-19 FIFA World Cup in Canada. The Sun Devils started a young lineup including three freshman and four sophomores.
