Beavers Sweep Idaho In Season Opener, 30-16, 30-26, 30-27

Aug. 30, 2002

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State volleyball team defeated the University of Idaho in three games in the season opener for both teams at the OSU Volleyball Showcase on Friday night. Game scores were 30-16, 30-26 and 30-27.

'I thought we played exceptionally well tonight. We were loose and focused,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'We really brought the things we focused on in practice this week to the floor tonight. We had an intrasquad in practice last week, and we didn't do so well. But, the team had a great attitude in practice this week, and it paid off. We executed extremely well tonight.'

Allison Lawrence hit .360 with a career-high 13 kills to lead the Beavers, while Megan McMillan posted a double-double, hitting .400 with 11 kills and a match-high 14 digs.

Laura Collins dished out 40 assists as the Beavers put together a balanced offensive attack. Joscelyn Hannaford and Katrina Nelson each picked up eight kills, and Michele Solomon hit .462 with seven kills. OSU finished the night with 52 kills and a .293 hitting percentage compared to Idaho's 35 kills and .111 mark.

OSU also came out on top defensively, outdigging the Vandals, 53-36. McMillan led all players, while two other Beavers had double-figures. Hannaford had 11, and Nikki Neuburger added 10.

After cruising to a 30-16 win in game one, OSU found things getting a little closer in the final two games. The Beavers had a 10-6 lead early in game two before the Vandals rattled off five straight points to jump ahead 11-10. Sarah Meek had three of her team-high 11 kills during Idaho's rally.

Idaho led by as many as three at one point, while the Beavers managed to tie the game several times but could not take the lead until a kill from Solomon gave the team a 26-25 advantage and never trailed the rest of the game.

The Vandals appeared to have game three in their control, leading from the first play of the game. Idaho went on to lead 20-12, its biggest advantage of the night, before the Beavers got back into the game. Karah Rhoades made her first collegiate appearance and picked up a quick kill on her first play, and OSU slowly got back into the game. Hannaford's kill got the Beavers to within six (20-14), and then with Idaho later up, 22-16, OSU strung together a four-point run on four straight kills - including two from McMillan.

A kill from Lawrence finally put the Beavers even with the Vandals at 25-25, and an Idaho service gave the Beavers their first lead of the game. OSU did not trail the rest of the match.

'The composure we showed as Idaho made that comeback in game two and then got the big lead in game three was exactly what I was expecting from the veteran group we have,' Somera said of her team that includes five senior starters. 'That's not something you can train. That's something that comes from experience.'

The Beavers continue Showcase play with two matches Saturday. They kick off the day with a noon match against Idaho State before wrapping up the weekend with a 7:30 p.m. match against Missouri. Idaho and Missouri play at 10 a.m., and Idaho and Idaho State face off at5:30 p.m.

In Friday's other match, Missouri swept Idaho State (30-20, 30-26, 30-26). Lisa Morris and Shen Danru had 14 kills apiece for the Tigers, who hit .345. ISU's Ali Gorny hit .500 with a team-high 11 kills.
