No. 14 Cal Opens 2002 With 2-0 Win Over Ohio State
Aug. 30, 2002
BERKELEY - The No. 14 California women's soccer team opened the 2002 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Ohio State in the opening round of the eighth-annual Cal Invitational Friday at Edwards Stadium.
The game was scoreless in the 69th minute when Cal All-American Laura Schott was whistled for her second yellow card of the contest. The referee showed the yellow and subsequently pulled a red card, sending Schott to the bench for the remainder of the match and forcing her to miss Sunday's game against Purdue.
'The good thing that we got out of this is one, we preserved a shutout which is what we are trying to do,' said Cal coach Kevin Boyd. 'We're concentrating on our defense. Two, we went down a player, and we came up with some tremendous character. Since we went down a player, our game actually picked up, and we started getting more chances than when we had 11 players out there. When it got important, we dug down and did a better job.'
In the 77th minute, Buckeye defender Jen Miller fouled Bears' U.S. U21 midfielder Kim Yokers in the penalty box, giving Cal a penalty kick. Cal senior newcomer Carly Fuller converted the penalty kick to put the Bears up 1-0.
Cal added an insurance goal in the 85th minute on a brilliant 25-yard strike by freshman midfielder Tracy Hamm.
The Bears outshot the Buckeyes 13-8 for the game. Cal redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ashley Sulprizio, who transferred from Nebraska, needed to make six saves to preserve the shutout in her collegiate debut.
In the first game of the tournament, Purdue upset No. 16 Saint Mary's, 1-0. Forward Annette Kent provided the game's only goal in the 21st minute by converting on a 10-yard strike to the far post. The goal was unassisted. In the 69th minute, Kent left the game with an injury and didn't return.
Both teams had six shots a piece for the match. Ten of those 12 shots were on goal. Purdue goalkeepers Jocelyn Cavalier and Maureen Carey each played a half in the shutout effort.
The Cal Invite wraps up Sunday with two more matches. Saint Mary's plays Ohio State at 2 p.m., and Cal vs. Purdue is scheduled to kick off at 4:30 p.m.
