OSU Tops Gonzaga In Season-Opener

Aug. 30, 2002

SPOKANE, Wash. - -

Oregon State sophomore Chad Bartlome provided the game's only score at the 34:39 mark, giving the Beaver men's soccer squad a season-opening 1-0 win on Friday over Gonzaga University at Martin Field.

The goal came courtesy of a through-ball from redshirt freshman Matt Johnson on a broken play. Bartlome one-touched the ball into the corner of the net past a diving Matt McCarthy in goal.

The Beavers struggled with a case of nervousness, and to a lesser extent, fatigue, in the first half, as OSU returned stateside from a 12-day, seven-game tour of Costa Rica just four days ago.

Ironically, the Beavers were outshot 8-3 in the first half and were still feeling out the Bulldog attack, when Bartlome put away the game winner. In the second half, OSU found its rhythm and was able to control the match's tempo, carving up the Bulldog defense for 12 shots.

OSU tested McCarthy on several occasions in the second frame, as he was forced to make seven saves in the final 45 minutes.

Beaver netminder Peter Billmeyer faced only one serious threat on the day, when a GU shot went off the crossbar at the 4:53 mark. The majority of his six saves came on long-range shots as the Beaver defense prevented Gonzaga from penetrating for good opportunities.

The win over Gonzaga, who competed in the NCAA Tournament last season, had fourth-year head coach Dana Taylor pleased with the start to the season.Taylor's squads have now won the season opener - all of which have been on the road or at a neutral site - in three of his first four seasons.

'Anytime you beat a team on the road, especially to start the season, one must be excited,' Taylor said. 'In the first half, we were quite nervous. The guys had very high expectations heading into the match and coming off of the trip to Costa Rica. I think they expected it to come easier.

'Gonzaga played very well and controlled much of the first half - we were fortunate to be up 1-0 at the break.

'In the second half, we settled in and relaxed and played. At that point, I felt we took over, the same way Gonzaga did in the first half. Gonzaga is a hard team to play against - they disrupted our play quite a bit, but hats off to Chad Bartlome for making the run and finding the ball from Matt Johnson.

OSU will have a week off before continuing its life on the road, as the Beavers return to Spokane for the first annual Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic. OSU squares off with Air Force on Friday, Sept. 6, and battles Tulsa on Sept. 8.

By the time OSU plays its first home match on Sept. 13 against Cal-Riverside, the Beavers will have logged over 7,000 miles of travel in less than a month.
