Women's Soccer Falls To Wisconsin In Season Opener
Aug. 30, 2002
LINCOLN, Neb. - Lauren Schmidt scored off a corner kick at 76:35 from Sarah Capel and the Wisconsin Badgers defeated the USC Trojans, 1-0, in the 2002 season opener for both teams in Friday action at the Nebraska adidas Invite. Schmidt scored on just the fifth shot of the game by the Badgers.
USC (0-1) controlled most of the game, outshooting Wisconsin (1-0) by a 20-6 margin and 10-1 advantage on corner kicks. The Women of Troy had several chances to score, including a shot by freshman Hillary Schwarzbach that hit the crossbar and chance by junior Jessica Edwards, who just missed a wide open net late in the second half.
'I think we will get better, but we have to do a better job at finishing our chances,' said USC head coach Jim Millinder. 'Wisconsin came with a good game plan. I think we will get better. We have to go back to the drawing board and come back to face North Carolina.'
USC will play No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday (Sept. 1) at 11 a.m. at Abbott Sports Complex in nonconference action.
