Beavers Drop Match 2-1 To Wake Forest
Sept. 1, 2002
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - -
Coming off a scoreless double-overtime draw against No. 10 Florida State on Friday night, the Oregon State women's soccer team (0-1-1) fell 2-1 to Wake Forest on Sunday morning at the FSU/Nike Invitational in the first-ever meeting between the teams.
The Demon Deacons (2-0-0) took the first half advantage on a score from Alena Thom when midfielder Sarah Kozey lofted a ball over the back line, leaving Thom with a close-range shot for the score and a 1-0 lead at the 30:08 mark.
Wake Forest's Katie Johnson put the Demon Deacons up 2-0 at 62:33 on an assist from Gabi Lieb. The Beavers answered less than a minute later with Beem's strike.
OSU was again tough under pressure, as the Beavers were outshot for the second consecutive game, but Beaver goalkeeper Jo Fletcher made five saves on the day and only seven of WFU's 18 shots were put on goal.
'We struggled today,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'We struggled to maintain possession of the ball. Wake Forest played exceptionally well today, and they dominated the tempo of the game. Our central defenders, and Jo Fletcher in goal, played very well though.
'I think, as a team, it was tough to get going; we were still a bit tired from Friday night. Give credit to Wake Forest though, for doing so well.
'I still feel good about our play this weekend. Now we've got to come back and make sure we're focused for this weekend.'
The Beavers return to Corvallis for two games this weekend. OSU opens its home slate Friday, Sept. 6 against Hawaii at 5 p.m., and takes on Gonzaga Sunday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m.
