Frazelle Scores Golden Goal As UCLA Defeats FIU, 1-0 In Overtime
Sept. 1, 2002
Fullerton, Calif. - UCLA senior midfielder Jimmy Frazelle (Folsom, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal in the fifth minute of overtime as the Bruins defeated Florida International, 1-0 at the Cal State Fullerton Soccer Town Classic. Junior Ty Maurin (Chino, Calif.) and senior Chadd Davis (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) assisted on the play.
The Bruins and Golden Panthers had battled for 94 minutes of scoreless ball before Frazelle ended the contest with a shot from about 12 yards out off Maurin's cross. UCLA's defense held FIU at bay throughout the contest, limiting the Golden Panthers to just five shots, two on goal. Meanwhile, FIU goalkeeper Roy Rosenberg tallied five saves on UCLA's 15 shots, including a point blank diving save off a Ryan Futagaki hard shot in the 84th minute.
'I felt we were very deliberate all day in controlling the pace of the game,' said UCLA head coach Tom Fitzgerald. 'We played extremely well defensively, as we did Friday, and were very solid in midfield. We're still trying to find our rhythm in the final third of the field, which is something every team in the world struggles with, and something we haven't spent too much time on that, so we still have a lot of work to do.'
With a 2-0 record in the tournament, UCLA captures the Soccer Town Classic team title. Senior defender Scot Thompson was selected as the tournament's Defensive MVP.
The Bruins (2-0) will return to Fullerton's Titan Stadium next Friday to face Cal State Fullerton at 7:00 pm.
