Volleyball Head Coach Mick Haley Gets Career Win No. 800
Sept. 1, 2002
Muncie, Ind. -- With a 3-0 win over Pittsburgh (0-2) Sunday afternoon, the third-ranked USC women's volleyball team gave second-year head coach Mick Haley his 800th collegiate career victory. Haley, who also spent four years as the U.S. Women's National Team coach, now boasts an 800-192-1 (.806) career record in 26 seasons in the college ranks.
USC improved to 2-0 this season with today's 30-22, 30-27, 30-22 win over the Panthers. With its second-straight loss at the Radisson Hotel Roberts/Nike Classic, Pittsburgh falls to 0-2.
The Women of Troy were tested early by the Panthers. After tying the score at five apiece in game one, Pittsburgh took a two-point lead, 7-5, thanks to two USC errors. Even though the Panthers managed to keep it close, that would mark its only lead of the game. USC pulled away in the stretch for a 30-22 win.
Game two belonged to the Women of Troy at the start as they used six-point and five-point runs to gain control. But even with a 17-9 lead, Pittsburgh fought back and used a five-point run of its own to close the gap to three (17-14). The Panthers again closely trailed the Trojans, but it was outside hitter April Ross who took care of the game, scoring five of the final 13 points and making key digs en route to the 30-27 victory.
USC and Pittsburgh reached a 16-16 tie in game three, but with two straight service aces from setter Toni Anderson the Women of Troy embarked on a seven-point run and eventually closed out the match, 30-22.
The Trojans finished with four players in double figures including Ross who had a match-high 17 kills (.387) in addition to 10 digs. Keao Burdine had 11 kills and 10 digs, Alicia Robinson posted 10 kills and a .444 attack percentage, while Katie Olsovsky had 10 kills, a .643 attack percentage and four blocks. Anderson finished the match with 32 assists, two aces and 11 digs.
USC will play the final match of the Radisson Hotel Roberts/Nike Classic on Monday, Sept. 2, against the No. 2/4-ranked Nebraska Huskers at Noon CST.
