Soccer Falls 2-1 at Top-20 Ranked Florida State
Sept. 2, 2002
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Oregon women's soccer team (0-2-0) lost a narrow 2-1 decision to top-20 ranked Florida State (1-0-1) in opening weekend play in the FSU Nike Invitational at the Seminole Soccer Complex Sunday.
Duck senior Sarah Denner scored the team's lone goal and first points of the season at 7:24 from just above the penalty kick mark on an assist by freshman Mele French. Florida State had opened scoring only eight seconds before 7:16 by Jez Ratliff, then broke the tie at 60:33 on goal by Camie Bybea, assisted by Ratliff.
On defense, senior Duck goalkeeper Sarah Peters came up with nine saves in 90 minutes, and faced 24 shots (12 in each period).
Offensively, Oregon's 11 shots came courtesy of freshman Carlie Ashcraft (3), Denner (2), sophomores Kelly Baird (2), Elise Minvielle (1), and Arlene Tuttle (1), and freshmen Jessica Fetzer (1) and Valerie Mayer (1).
'We took tremendous steps forward from our first game,' head coach Bill Steffen said. 'Unfortunately, we gave them a goal on an errant back pass to their player. I liked our improvement on offense. We had two players with shots off the posts, and Christine Mintz, Carlie, and Cristan Higa had good showings, as did Sarah in goal. We need to continue to mature and grow as a team, and keep minimizing the mental lapses.'
One of 10 Duck opponents this season ranked top-25 in recent preseason polls, Florida State headed into the match tabbed nationally No. 17 by the NSCAA, No. 16 by Soccer Times, and No. 13 by Soccer America, and was an NCAA Tournament qualifier the past two seasons.
Sunday's game was televised live by the Sunshine Network, one of two Duck TV appearances in 2002. Oregon's game at Portland will be televised locally by Action Cable Sports Network.
Earlier in the weekend, the Ducks had opened their season with an equally stiff opponent in Wake Forest, losing 3-0 Friday to the Demon Deacons who had made NCAA trips the past five seasons.
Looking ahead, Steffen's crew opens its home season vs. Gonzaga, Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at Pape' Field in Eugene. Oregon sports a 2-0-1 all-time record vs. the Zags, including a 1-0 win last year at home.
